We were on our way home the other day, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a flare of light glimmering as the sun bounced off a piece of glass along the roadside. I said to Jenny "woah what is that??" She immediately said "honey just keep driving, we don't need it." My curiosity was overwhelmingly strong, and I was almost magnetically compelled (haha great I sound like a garbage magnet) to pull over and take a look. I got out of the car and as I peered downward I heard the angelic hosts singing in a glorious melodic tone. aaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!! There it was in all of it's vintage splendor; a beautiful record player from I presume the 60's or 70's just sitting there begging for someone to give it a home. I immediately heard this disturbing voice in my head (at least I think it was in my head) saying "it probably doesn't even work, it is in the garbage after all", but I easily blocked Jenny out. I plugged my ears to to the pestering voices and proceeded to do the "right" thing and load the trunk. I figured it was at the very least worth bringing home, and testing out since it was in such impeccable condition. And if (worst case scenario) it didn't work, I guess driving it back to the front yard where I found it would've been a viable option.
Upon arriving home I quickly unloaded this new found gem, burst through my front door, and set it all up. It was totally ready to go, and then I found myself hesitating for a brief moment before plugging it in and pressing the start switch. I thought to myself, I sure hope this works or Jenny is going to say those four infamous yet often annoying words. I told you so! I plugged my new (to me) Silvertone record player in, loaded a record, and hit the start button. It was a glorious and rewarding moment, as it went off without a hitch and performed brilliantly just as a record player out of the garbage should. The sweet sound of Lionel Ritchie was soon flooding my ear canals and I was ecstatic. (not about the Lioned Ritchie lol, but that fact it worked)
You see... last year I parted with my old record player, and although I thought I was cool with my decision, I later regretted it. I miss that distinct sound you can only enjoy from vinyl. Sort of parallels with that distinct look and feel you only get with film cameras. Anyways, I'm back in the saddle again and listening to the soothing sounds of Al Green today.
Have a great weekend folks!
Shane
Yep it sits up on the speakers and leaves a nice space for your record collection. Sort of wish I didn't sell a large portion of my records, but am thankful I kept a few favorites back.

Old dials are uber cool...

Everyone should have some Al Green in their collection. (: (let's stay together)

I thought I'd share two fantastically hilarious images from the artists I mentioned above. 1. How did they ever convince Lionel Ritchie that sliding down a big yellow pole in that attire was cool?? Who knows, maybe this absolutely ridiculous centerfold was his idea...you gotta love the 80's. 2. I don't know if I would've ever listened to Al Greens music if I saw this picture first. Sorry Al you are the man, but I hope your sense of personal style has evolved!

Hey,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on this great find. I am amazed that even the needle was in good shape. Would like to hear something on it, its been so long since I have heard anything played on vinyl.
Did you see how a track from that Al Green album was featured near the start of "The Book of Eli" movie? A very poignant scene needed a great song to match.
cheers,
John
