Weekend Excursion to St. Jacobs Market

A rare weekend with nothing to do was staring us in the face last Friday evening. Jenny and I looked at each other simultaneously, and both said "what do you want to do this weekend?" A moment of indecisiveness came upon us, and we both said "I dunno". Then, without warning my mind began to wander. (not the first time that's happened) hmmmm....what should we do? Perhaps, we'd take the private jet to Cali (that's what the cool people call it) or maybe head west and ski at Whistler? So many thoughts racing through my mind of the endless possibilities and adventures we could embark upon. And then I was suddenly startled as Jenny said "are you even listening to me?' My momentary daydream abruptly ended, and reality started to sink back in. Maybe, just maybe...I've been watching a bit to much television as the dark season approaches. So after a bit of discussion, we decided to take our annual trek to St. Jacobs Market and visit the land of the Amish. It's always so relaxing up that way, and if we ever were going to move, the Guelph area would probably be our choice. (relax...we're so not moving, so don't get your shirt in a knot) We had a fantastic day, and totally lucked out with the weather as the forecast for all of Southern Ontario seemed to be rain. blah! We stopped at some roadside garage sales (of course) and antique stores too. We even stopped near Elmira to have lunch beside Ontario's last covered bridge in existence. (ooooooo I know what riveting excitement, right?) Anyways, it was just a simple Saturday road trip, but it was sure nice to get out of town for the day.
Here are a few pics we snapped along the way.

I love this abandoned street car along HWY 6 just before Guelph.

Just a garage sale item.

Driving through the covered bridge.

This Amish boy was working out of the back of a truck at the market.

Gavin tried on some fun hats, but ultimately decided on a spiderman toque. surprise surprise!

This Amish guy looks sketchy doesn't he? Pehaps he's selling more than just birdseed...

This Asian man playing the weird instrument was very concerned that I was going to sell his image for money lol He kept yelling at me (in broken engrish) "private use only" as if his image was worth something.

mmm mmm mmmmmm gotta love pomegranates! A lot of work for such little reward but they taste fantastic.

  1. I'm surprised they let you take their photos (unless you caught one candidly), most Amish don't want their photos taken! Maybe he's smirking because he always wanted to model but couldn't, so he was so excited when someone wanted to take his photo! :)

  2. haha I'm pretty stealthy, and honestly don't think he even saw it coming. And perhaps your theory is true...maybe next year I'll run it by him (:
